Application

Diethyl fluoromalonate is a chemical that can be used to generate fluoroacetic acid. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the growth of resistant mutants in vitro with magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The mechanism of action is not known, but it may involve the formation of a carbonyl group due to elimination of hydrogen fluoride. Diethyl fluoromalonate also reacts with malonic acid to form an aryl halide, which can then react with nitrogen atoms in cells and produce reactive oxygen species. This chemical has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in rats.
